I spent my time the past two days running tabs at the tournament. Oi weh. The tournament ran about an hour behind schedule, but at least I did nothing incorrect directly affecting that situation. Donna suspected the problems that arose on Saturday were due to faulty computer program inputs Eric Leibold made Friday evening.
I did make a few relatively minor mistakes, such as overlooking that a judge wrote "aff wins", but printed the neg's school code. A slight problem.
I do not know why, and I do not know how, but at least two people fell ill Saturday. One girl made it to finals in two events, but apparently she upchucked before she could perform. I never confirmed whether that was just nervousness, or if she really became sick.
I recall last year I performed a duet with Courtney Murray, because she really wanted to do duet, but had no partner. I cannot act, but I agreed to participate. Anyhow, we somehow advanced to semifinals once (I think the prelims judge circled the rankings incorrectly, or they got it backward in the tab room), and after watching the other performers, I ran off to the bathroom and feigned illness so I would not have to perform our crappy piece. The other teams were all theatre kids, and they were good- as in, twelve times better than Joe Manak good.
I might not have gotten cold feet if it was only the other entries and the judge, but there were more than a dozen of the theatre kids' debate friends observing, too. I competed with some of them in other events. Few things fluster me, but compared to the theatre kids, Courtney and I would only have embarrassed ourselves. Afterward, though, Courtney was right- I should have just sucked it up and gone. She and Mr. Powell were quite displeased with me, but neither of them bitched me out about it.
But it's all over now. We finished early both nights- I had not expected to leave until midnight, but I left around 10:30. Which meant I slept well.
