I phoned April this morning circa 11:30 for some babbling. Keiko (the killer whale from the "Free Willy" movies) died this weekend, topping headlines until Saddam Hussein's capture pushed the tragic loss of Keiko back to page nine. Before April answered the phone, I had a line set up: "Hey, did you hear the news?" after which I expected April to reply something to the effect of "You mean about Saddam? Why, yes, of course!" My rehearsed response to this was, "Oh, did they find him? I just wanted to inform you that Keiko The Lovable Killer Whale is dead."at 8:48 PM
I called April. As planned, I asked, "Did you hear the news?" April merely said, "No- what?" Confused, I thought perhaps she was toying with me, so I said, "Keiko is dead!" She didn't seem impressed, and I then realized that she had neither heard about poor little Keiko nor about not-so-poor little Saddam. April and Beth cooped themselves up in their dorm room this morning, studying for exams. I enlightened April as to the Saddam news, but she brushed it off because she needed to finish studying for microeconomics.
